The Audience Whisper Intro
Whether you are presenting to an audience of one, one thousand or ten thousand, how you share your information will determine your success. You want to help people. You want to sell your services or have people contribute to your charity. I help you turn on their minds and have them open their wallets.
Beginning in 1983, while serving in the U.S. Navy Submarine Service, I began my teaching career. The stakes were incredibly high back then, during the Cold War. It was not uncommon to be carrying nuclear payload missiles while experiencing highly charged, close encounters with Russian submarines at depths of hundreds of feet underwater. If a trainee made a mistake, the entire crew could die. Making sure that my training was effective, and that people retained the information, was a moral imperative.
My skills at sharing information with others at sea and in the classroom earned me the Master Training Specialist designation, awarded only to the top 5% of Naval Instructors.
Carrying my teaching skills into Law Enforcement, the stakes remained at the extraordinary level. Ranging from the obvious dangers of the job, to the liability concerns, the risk associated with making mistakes continued to be a huge consideration.
I set out to enhance my training and curriculum development skills. Through my work, I earned the coveted POST Master Instructorcertification, the highest level of instructor certification in California law enforcement.
During a teaching career spanning over 34 years, I have taught for the U.S. Navy, at three San Diego area colleges, two Police Academies, with the US Department of Justice and the Simon Wiesenthal Center (Holocaust Museum). I’ve created and enhanced several college degree courses as well as courses taught at the national, state and local levels.
As a Training Coordinator, I have selected, supervised, coordinated and scheduled a diverse group of instructors; monitoring POST mandates for Basic, Advanced and Reserve courses; managing class and training schedules; providing orientation and professional development opportunities; serving as an Instructor of Cultural Diversity, Racial Profiling, EEO, Ethics, Fair and Impartial Policing, Community Policing, Problem Solving, Community Mobilization, Media Sensitivity, High Risk Vehicle Stops, Rules of Evidence, Juvenile Procedures, First Aid/CPR, Criminal and Constitutional Law courses. I also provided advice and guidance to both instructors and senior-level management on training and development issues.
During my 28-year law enforcement career, I’ve worked every patrol Division in the City of San Diego, as an undercover Detective in several assignments, flew as a Tactical Flight Officer in the Police helicopter unit, taught as a Field Training Officer, supervised training as a Field Training Sergeant and am currently assigned as a Sergeant and Collision Reconstructionist at the Accident Investigation Bureau in the Traffic Division.
Along with receiving in excess of 130 informal commendations from people ranging from the Chief of Police to the City Attorney, State Parole Office, California Highway Patrol and citizens, I’ve also received eighteen formal law enforcement commendations including a Life Saving Medal for rescuing three victims from a raging house fire.
I currently work with the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST). POST was established by the Legislature in 1959 to set minimum selection and training standards for California law enforcement. The POST commission has more than 130 staff members. My role with POST is on the Quality Assurance Program. Selected because of my extensive practical knowledge of instructional and public speaking techniques, I audit POST sponsored training courses. Providing objective evaluation using an established Rubric, I evaluate all aspects of the course including design, operation, safety aspects, logistics, curriculum documentation, and individual Instructors. This is based on a coaching and mentoring approach where improvements are aligned with best practices not just in California, but also nationwide. My 17 years of experience with the U.S. Dept. of Justice allowed me nationwide exposure and discussions with experts from all over the US , Guam and Puerto Rico.
My key areas of expertise lie within not only designing training courses but also in helping speakers prepare for being on stage or in front of a camera for online training. No matter how good the course is, if the presenter isn’t fully prepared, the training will not be effective. That’s where I come in. I work with people in exactly those areas so both the material and the speaker are fully prepared.
In addition to my work as a a trainer, my management expertise extends to the corporate world where I am the owner of both a manufacturing corporation and an agricultural equipment distribution company. I also serve as the Chief Grants Officer with EPerentice.com, an on-line training company that launched in 2016 and Stars of Courage, a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to a new and effective approach for raising people out of poverty (starsofcourage.org).
